For example: things like heating and cooling, hot water, refrigeration, appliances modes and pumps, and lighting. So, if you can identify the top four or five of these and get a rough idea of where you need to concentrate on to make the best energy savings.

Going forward, you need to set this as your benchmark and start on saving accordingly. Maybe, then in a couple years time you can look back at this benchmark and find out how much you have managed to save.

2. Get The Staff Engaged

Another important thing to take care of while running towards energy management in your business is to look at the fact that you are not the only one running towards the cause. It takes teamwork to reach a goal. Make sure to clearly communicate with the staff and motivate them towards the cause of energy saving.

So, it is important to let your staff know that you are keen to improve energy efficiency of the business and encourage them to look around at their day-to-day work and find areas to make some energy savings.

For example: if it is the middle of summer, you might want to communicate to your staff to be careful with the usage of air conditioners. If it is winter, maybe think more about the usage of water heaters or room heaters.

It is also equally important to communicate that the measures you are taking is because you want to focus on the environmental benefits of the energy savings. It is important to let the staff know that you are not only trying to save money, but you are also trying to reduce the effect on the environment.

3. Identify The Areas And Manage Them

Once you have the staff engaged, it is the time to identify energy savings and then come up with an energy management plan. Energy management plans will constitute the ways on how you are going to make those savings in your small business operation.

It is quite important to identify the top energy loads at your business and make a plan to manage the energy efficiency in those areas.
